Air Conditioners

To be placed at the rear of the Public Use Site beside sign labeled Air Conditioners and Dehumidifiers.

Aluminum Cans

Aluminum cans can be recycled in the yellow recycle boxes at the Public Use Site.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze can be poured into the used antifreeze tank under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the Landfill. There is no charge for residents.

Appliances

Non freon bearing appliances such as stoves, washing machines, and dryers can be dropped off at the scrap metal storage area at the Public Use Site at the Landfill. Dishwashers containing little metal can be thrown away in the open top dumpsters.

Asbestos

The Augusta Regional Landfill is not permitted to accept friable or non-friable asbestos. If you need further information, please call the landfill at 540-337-2857.

Ashes

Ashes should be cool to the touch and must be taken directly to the active landfill no later than 3:30 PM.

Batteries

Lead acid batteries may be recycled under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site. Alkaline batteries may be thrown away with household waste. NiCad, NiMh, Li-Ion, LiPo and other batteries are considered hazardous waste and not permitted at the Augusta Regional Landfill.

Brake Fluid

Augusta County hosts a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall. The waste must be generated in a residence (NOT FROM A BUSINESS). All Staunton, Waynesboro, and County residents may participate.

Bulky Waste

Couches and mattresses may be disposed of in the bulky item open top containers at the Public Use Site.

Car Batteries (Lead-Acid)

May be recycled under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Cardboard

Cardboard can be recycled in the yellow recycle boxes or open top cardboard dumpsters at the Public Use Site.

Cell Phones & Smart Phones

Cell phones, tablets and electronics containing hazardous batteries are not accepted at the Augusta Regional Landfill.

Computers & Electronics

All computers and electronics may be disposed of in the green open top containers at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Construction Materials

All construction materials may be disposed of in the green open top containers at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Cooking Oil

Cooking oil should be solidified with kitty litter or dirt and placed in the regular trash.

Dead Animals

Dead animals may be disposed of in the active landfill during normal operating hours from 8 AM until 2 PM. No dead animals will be accepted after 2:00 PM. Follow the purple signs for the active landfill area.

Dehumidifiers

To be placed at the rear of the Public Use Site beside sign labeled Air Conditioners and Dehumidifiers.

Fluorescent Tubes

Residents may dispose of limited quantities of fluorescent tubes generated from their household in the bulky item open top containers at the Public Use Site. Businesses must dispose of their fluorescent tubes in accordance with EPA Regulations. The preferred method for residential disposal is through the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall.

Furniture

All furniture may be disposed of in the green open top containers at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Gasoline

Augusta County hosts a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall. The waste must be generated in a residence (NOT FROM A BUSINESS). All Staunton, Waynesboro, and County residents may participate.

Glass Containers

Glass (Food / Beverage) containers can be recycled in the yellow recycling boxes at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Hydraulic Oil, Lamp Oil, Diesel Fuel

Hydraulic oil, lamp oil, and diesel fuel may be poured into the used oil containers under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Kerosene

Kerosene may be poured into the used oil containers under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Latex Paint

Latex paint should be solidified with kitty litter or dirt and placed in the regular trash.

Lumber

All lumber goes into the open top boxes at the Public Use Site. LUMBER DOES NOT GO IN THE YARD WASTE PILE.

Mercury

Augusta County hosts a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall. The waste must be generated in a residence (NOT FROM A BUSINESS). All Staunton, Waynesboro, and County residents may participate.

Mixed Paper

Any type of mixed paper may be recycled in yellow recycle boxes at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Motor Oil

Used motor oil can be poured into the used oil containers under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Oil-based Paint

Pesticides

Augusta County hosts a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall. The waste must be generated in a residence (NOT FROM A BUSINESS). All Staunton, Waynesboro, and County residents may participate.

Phone Books

Old phone books may be recycled in the yellow recycling boxes (as mixed paper) at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Plastic

The Augusta Regional Landfill no longer recycles plastic. Residents bringing plastic should disposed of it in the open tops or the compactor box at the public use site.

Prescription Drugs & Other Medications

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office accepts pills at their office in Verona. No liquids or sharps / syringes may be dropped off. Medications may also be disposed of through a national drug take back program that is sponsored by various organizations. Propane Tanks

Must have a minimum of a three inch hole to be disposed of at the Augusta Regional Landfill.

Refrigerators

Doors and Shelves are to be removed prior to being placed at the rear of the Public Use Site beside sign labeled Refrigerators.

Scrap Metal

All scrap metal (stoves, grills, bikes, hot water heaters, washing machines, and driers) can be dropped off at the scrap metal storage area at the Public Use Site at the Landfill. There is no charge for residents. Refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers shall be placed in the designated areas so landfill employees can safely remove the refrigerants.

Stains

Augusta County hosts a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event each fall. The waste must be generated in a residence (NOT FROM A BUSINESS). All Staunton, Waynesboro, and County residents may participate.

Steel / Tin Cans

Steel / tin (Food / Beverages) cans can be recycled in the yellow recycle boxes at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Stumps

The Augusta Regional Landfill does accept stumps. The scale clerks will direct customers to the storage location. Stumps do not go into the yard waste pile.

Syringes or Sharps

Household generated syringes or sharps should be placed in a rigid plastic container, labeled Sharps, sealed, and placed in the garbage. Commercially generated needles must be disposed of in accordance with the Virginia Regulated Medical Waste Regulations.

Televisions

Televisions may be disposed of in the bulky item roll off containers at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Tires

All tires are subject to a Tipping Fee. Tires should be placed in the designated open top trailer at the Public Use Site at the landfill. You can find a full list of fees on our Fees Schedule page.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid can be poured into the used motor oil containers under the wooden shelter at the Public Use Site at the landfill.

Yard Waste

All brush, grass clippings, and wood goes into the yard waste pile. Follow the green arrows at the landfill. Please do not put any type of lumber (building materials) in the pile. The material is ground and recycled on-site. The landfill does not provide mulch to citizens.
